本书是世界上最伟大的讽刺文学名著之一。主人公帅克善良、勇敢、机智，貌似平凡且不露声色，看起来有些“愚昧”且滑稽可笑，甚至被军方宣布为“神经不正常”而退伍。一天，帅克在公共场合议论奥匈帝国皇储遇刺事件，因而被秘密警察逮捕。几经周折，帅克终于回到了家，但不幸又被征招入伍。犯风湿病的帅克只好由佣人用轮椅推着，一路高呼着爱国口号去参军。在一系列的事件中，帅克用智慧和令人啼笑皆非的“表演”巧妙地同奥匈帝国反动政权做斗争，所到之处被他搅得鸡飞狗跳、天翻地覆，他是捷克人民心中一名真正的好兵。
本书至今被译成世界上50多种文字，曾经先后多次被改编成电影、电视剧和话剧等。书中所展现的讽刺故事影响了一代又一代人。无论作为语言学习的课本，还是作为通俗的文学读本，《好兵帅克（插图·中文导读英文版）》对当代中国的青少年都将产生积极的影响。为了使读者能够了解英文故事概况，进而提高阅读速度和阅读水平，在每章的开始部分增加了中文导读。同时，为了读者更好地理解故事内容，书中加入了大量插图。

哈谢克（全称：雅洛斯拉夫·哈谢克，JaroslavHasek，1883-1923），捷克著名作家，被誉为“捷克散文之父”。
哈谢克于20世纪初开始文学创作，是一位多产的作家，一生共发表1200多篇短篇小说，而使他名扬世界的却是长篇小说《好兵帅克》。这部世界讽刺文学名著是捷克有史以来的最伟大的文学作品之一，是一部被公认为与《堂吉诃德》齐名的作品。
