Moreimportantly, the proposed collapsesimulation technique has already beensuccessfully used in the design of somereal-world supertallbuildings, withsignificant savings of tens of thousands oftons of concrete and steel,whilst achievinga better seismic performance and safety.The proposed novel solution forearthquake disaster simulation of urbanareas usingnonlinear multiple degree-of- freedom MDOF model and time-historyanalysis delivers several unique advantages:1 true representation of thecharacteristic featuresof individualbuildings and ground motions; 2 realisticvisualization of earthquakescenarios,particularly dynamic shaking of buildingsduring earthquakes; 3 detailedpredictionof seismic response and losses on each storyof every building at any timeperiod. Theproposed earthquake disaster simulationtechnique has been successfullyimplementedin the seismic performance assessments andearthquake loss predictions of severalcentral cities in China. The outcomes of thesimulation as well as thefeedback from theend users are encouraging, particularly forthe government officialsandoradministration department personnel withlimited professional knowledge of earthquakeengineering.The book offers readers a systematicsolution to earthquake disaster simulationof civil infrastructures.
