Foreword In Time After Nova， Chinese sci-fi novelist Li Cixin depicted a group of children making close contact with several pottery jars from remote antiquity in the Forbidden City. When the children hold the ancient relics in their hands， they suddenly realize that “wherever they go， their lives are perpetually bonded to the pottery jars， which are the start and end of their lives as well as the sources of their power.” The Forbidden City， also known as the Palace Museum， has become a sanctuary for the protection and inheritance of human civilization that bridges the past， present， and future. In 1418， the 16th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)， ground broke on an imperial palace that would house 26 Ming and Qing (1644-1911) emperors. Emperor Zhu Di made 15 years of preparations to relocate the capital to Beijing. History books record the birth of the Forbidden City with only a few words， but completion of the magnificent imperial palace required painstaking efforts from thousands of artisans. They drew blueprints for grand halls and decorated chambers with intricate designs. Their hardship and wisdom radiated from every silent tree， blade of grass， brick and tile found within the imperial palace. Over time， dynasties fell and rose， and the person atop the throne came and went until they came no more.
