Vocational college English courses, as compulsory courses or restricted elective courses for higher vocational college students of non-English majors, plays an important role in fostering the students‘ pradical English-language competence, cultural awareness and intercultural communication skills. They promote the students’ cognitive development in language learning, thereby better cultivate students‘ ’thinking and self-expression abilities. They are also beneficial for forging the students‘ global mindset, broadening their international horizons, enhancing their pride and confidence in Chinese culture, and developing the correct outlook on the world, on life and on values.
Digitalization refers to enabling or improving processes by leveraging digital technologies represented by cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things, blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), etc. It empowers the construction of high-quality vocational college English courses through enriching the scenario-based applications such as intelligent classroom, adaptive learning, smart diagnosis of students’ learning progress, smart classroom evaluations etc., which making the process of higher vocational college English teaching and learning more creative, experiential and inspirational.
However, it is found that at present there are some problems in digitalization empowering the construction of high-quality vocational college English courses, such as teachers‘ and students’ insufficient digital awareness and thinking, insufficient digital infrastructure and equipment in higher vocational colleges and teachers‘ and students’ insufficient digital knowledge and skills.
In order to solve the above-mentioned problems, it is proposed that advanced concepts, reasonable principles and effective methods should be adopted to construct high-quality vocational college English courses empowered by digitalization. The advanced concepts include ”fostering virtue and nurturing talents” ”student-centered” and ”striving for excellence through hard work and comprehensive learning”. The reasonable principles involve integration of ideological and political education and the vocational college English teaching, integration of industry and education and school-enterprise cooperation, making English language learning serve the practical purpose and leveraging the role of digital technology in construction of high-quality vocational college English courses. The effective methods include accurately setting teaching objectives, carefully developing teaching materials, carefully organizing teaching implementation, reasonably making teaching assessments and actively building an elite teaching team with the empowerment of digital technologies so as to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of vocational college English teaching, cultivating students competence to apply English correctly, fluently, and appropriately in cross-cultural communication and achieve good results of English learning.
