The 8th edition of the Standard Korean textbook series, comprising three volumes, is designed for students majoring in Korean at universities and colleges. It is also suitable for university foreign language courses, second language programs, and beginner learners in short-term training classes. The curriculum focuses on detailed instruction in Korean pronunciation, basic grammar, and commonly used vocabulary. The teaching approach emphasizes combining education with enjoyment, integrating language knowledge with Korean culture, connecting grammatical theory with language practice, and ensuring a gradual and enjoyable improvement in Korean proficiency. The goal is to enable learners to solidly master a foreign language and achieve intermediate to advanced levels in the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK).
Standard Korean is the earliest officially published Korean language textbook in China. It was meticulously compiled by Professor An Binghao, former dean of the Korean Department at Peking University and a Doctor of Linguistics, along with Korean language faculty from universities nationwide. Since its publication, it has been widely adopted by Korean language programs across Chinese universities and has received acclaim from foreign learners. It is honored as an excellent textbook by Peking University and has remained the best-selling foundational Korean language textbook in the country.
In line with contemporary publishing standards, the editors have incorporated feedback from faculty and students, leading to multiple revisions of the textbook. The 8th edition retains the original framework and content while standardizing the format with each lesson divided into five sections: 1. Text, 2. Vocabulary, 3. Grammar, 4. Exercises, 5. Reading. The Vocabulary section highlights new words introduced in the lesson‘s text, while new vocabulary in the Grammar and Exercises sections is compiled in the final Supplementary Vocabulary section. Additionally, a new Reading section has been added to provide extended learning content. This section includes various forms such as intellectual quizzes, riddles, poetry recitations, funny jokes, proverbs, celebrity anecdotes, historical stories, and scientific trivia, offering readers a rich cultural experience and creating a lively self-learning environment. Furthermore, outdated vocabulary from the 7th edition’s texts and exercises has been updated to reflect the vitality and practicality of the Korean language. Learners can scan the QR codes in each lesson to listen to recordings by Korean experts. Lastly, the Standard Korean 8th Edition Workbook volumes 1, 2, and 3 have been concurrently edited and published. These workbooks contain standard answers to exercises and reading questions from each textbook volume, along with additional reading materials and practice questions corresponding to the TOPIK, catering to both teachers‘ preparation needs and students’ self-study requirements.
In the era of AI technological advancement, there is a higher demand for foreign language proficiency among various talents. The market urgently requires foreign language generalists who can collaborate with machines and integrate tools effectively. Artificial intelligence has sparked the fifth revolution in translation technology, making proficiency in standard foreign languages an indispensable cognitive literacy for contemporary individuals. Foreign language skills not only establish the foundation for human-machine collaboration but also constitute the meta-ability to assess AI translation quality. Only with precise foreign language analysis and professional bilingual judgment can one effectively navigate various intelligent translation systems, performing semantic calibration and cultural adaptation of machine-generated content. It is crucial to recognize that the lifeline of AI translation systems lies in silicon-based circuits and electrical pulses, which have physical limitations. In contrast, human linguistic intelligence is rooted in biological neural networks, forming a creative language generation mechanism through continuous knowledge internalization and cognitive iteration. This fundamental difference determines that in bilingual translation practice, human translation always occupies a central position. The translators cultural decoding ability, contextual reconstruction wisdom, and aesthetic discernment constitute cognitive dimensions that translation machines cannot surpass. Thus, mastering a standard foreign language is imperative for leveraging AI tools, transforming technology into an asset rather than a constraint.
In this context, acquiring standard Korean is an empowering skill essential for contemporary Eastern learners. We hope the 8th edition of Standard Korean textbook will launch you on an enriching journey to master Korean, amplify your skills, and unlock opportunities to excel on the international stage.
